Storm Water Management Literacy
Almost 100% of the students who currently attend Thomas Viaduct Middle school have participated in a literacy program that calls attention to the significance of erosion not only on their school grounds, but in the greater community and state. Through their 6th grade science class students have actively monitored sites on campus and observed areas where erosion is a problem vs. rain gardens and retention ponds where we as humans strive to reduce our impact. Students are active in maintaining and monitoring our four rain gardens/runoff ponds.
Earth Day Celebration Week
Earth Day Celebration Week is a week devoted to informing the school community about energy conservation and challenging staff and students to improve. An announcement is made each morning by students that examine one aspect of reduce, recycle and reuse. The announcements range include videos, teacher/student sing along “If You See a Piece of Trash Pick It Up” and student created public services announcements presented in Spanish. The week is devoted to celebrating the Earth and inspiring each other to be more “Green.” The activities build over the week to Friday, which is our Green Day.

Students created these videos for the HCPSS Middle School Environmental Film Festival. The group of 7th and 8th grade students researched and created the films to bring awareness to current environmental issues.
Staff Literacy
Vampire energy is an ongoing concern being a technology-heavy school. In order to help control our energy consumption, students created vampire energy notifications to help remind faculty and staff to both turn off any unused technology during the day and at night and to unplug any technology that is using vampire energy over long weekends and spring and winter breaks.
Artist in Residency Program and Mosaic
In the spring of 2016, the entire TVMS student body worked to complete a mosaic mural during our Artist in Residency program featuring South African artist, Carien Quiroga. Using all recycled materials, students integrated the art of metal embossing & glass mosaic with symbolism and the writing process while reinforcing concepts from the State mandated curriculum in Social Studies and Language Arts. During the 6-day residency students explored the TVMS mission statement: Connect, Collaborate and Create as a theme for the mosaic mural. They developed an in-depth understanding of the benefits and beauty of using recycled materials along with the mosaic mural process as they created a 60 square foot embossed metal and glass mosaic artwork, permanently installed by the entranceway to the school. Students created small individual metal embossed disks and glass mosaics using recycled materials that were integrated into a larger final artwork. Students were then given the opportunity to reflect on the residency at its conclusion, focusing on skills learned, knowledge gained and the mosaic mural project as community building endeavor. Strengthening 21st Century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking and decision making in addition to the importance of the the 3R’s were infused throughout the residency and formed the foundation of this project.
